The J. Paul Getty Trust: User Experience Designer
Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion at Getty
Job Summary
Are you interested in helping design web applications that showcase some of the best art collections in the world? Getty Digital is looking for a User Experience Designer with a strong focus on elegant design skills to join our team.
At Getty Digital, we’re re-imagining how we can use software to provide access to our collections and research. We intend to provide a deeply connected, consistent experience for scholars, researchers, and enthusiasts as they explore the complex information held across the Getty.
We believe that the best software is built by teams with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and ideas. We strive to provide a collaborative environment where all team members have the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to the software we build and our overall vision. We welcome applicants with non-traditional backgrounds and value practical experience and ability as much as credentials and degrees.
We’re looking for a User Experience Designer to join our UX team and work with our software development teams. You’ll report to the UX lead, and will be responsible for working with them and the development teams to help design the look and feel of major software initiatives across the Getty, as well as iterating on and improving the UX of existing applications and projects. You will work with subject matter experts, UX researchers, software development teams, and other designers, collaborating to build experiences that help share the information shared across the Getty with the larger world. We are currently redesigning the Getty Museum’s collection online, and have recently worked on the Research Institutes archival collections, and a tool to allow the museum’s collections to be used in Animal Crossing.
We practice design thinking and goal-centered design, which means we start with user research. Our ideal candidate loves brainstorming, ideating and problem solving, and isn’t afraid of a blank page. You’re comfortable with turning user requirements and wireframes into usable design components that make up a cohesive, elegant, and user-friendly application. In particular, we’re looking for someone whose design abilities can complement our existing usability expertise.
The Getty is among the most prestigious cultural heritage organizations in the world, dedicated to furthering the study of the history of art. We support a hybrid work environment, sometimes working from home, and sometimes on an amazing campus amongst fabulous art, architecture, and archives, collaborating with world-class scientists, curators, librarians, archivists, and academics. We offer a family friendly work environment with benefits including accrued vacation, personal and sick time, every other Friday off, excellent benefits, and a strong commitment to balancing work and personal life.
