Job Summary

Responsible for developing and directing strategic, proactive communications and public relations efforts for the Getty’s international initiatives, including the 10-year Ancient Worlds Now.  Responsibilities will include developing strategic communications plans in coordination with international partners and collaborating organizations, including development and refinement of institutional and program messaging, providing public relations counsel to staff and directors, creating external media documents, drafting remarks and op‐eds, planning and executing announcement events, and shaping the online presence of the initiative’s strategies and achievements on both a national and international level.  Hires and manages staff at the Getty and external contractors/vendors around the world as needed for international events and communications outreach.  Works with high-level collaborative partners from international governments and NGOs. Travels internationally as needed.  Also oversees communications/media relations efforts on behalf of other programs, and supervises a Communication Lead in the implementation of that work.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements strategic, proactive communications and media plans
  • Coordinates communications strategies with international collaborative partners and organizations
  • Develops and refines institutional and initiative messaging
  • Develops, executes, and oversees written communications of considerable complexity, including press releases, media alerts, background materials, remarks, op‐eds, blog posts, social media posts, digital content, articles for Getty publications, brochures, newsletters, specialized pitch letters, and other items
  • Proactively identifies news and strategically pitches high‐level news locally, regionally, nationally and internationally
  • Plans and executes major events, including international announcements and press events with outside partners
  • Oversees international vendors in the execution of events and campaigns
  • Coordinates web, social media and digital content in areas of responsibility as part of strategic communication plan
  • Reviews and edits brochures, collaborative press releases from partners, and other materials as needed
  • Communicates regularly with internal clients regarding media coverage, requests, and priorities; works closely with internal clients to position events and activities accurately and compellingly
  • Strategically targets domestic and international media to receive press materials; strategically pitches individual members of the press in accordance with communications plans
  • Receives, assesses, and processes image/information/interview requests from the media
  • Plans, oversees press visits and interviews with internal clients and collaborative partners


  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Art History, or related degree and a minimum of five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience preferably in the visual arts

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written communication skills; experience writing press releases, journalism for print and digital outlets, newsletters, brochures, and other materials
  • Outstanding investigative and research skills
  • Experience and mastery working with the media, including international media
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to international cultural issues
  • Ability to write and synthesize materials and communicate information effectively across print and digital platforms
  • Demonstrates ability to develop strategic plans and manage multiple projects and commitments at highest level
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in social media
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external contacts at all levels
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with diverse communities and people
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Design Suite
  • Experience using Cision media tracking/research program desirable
  • Fluency in other languages in addition to English is desirable
