The J. Paul Getty Trust: Assistant Digital Editor


Job Summary

As Getty evolves its website to include more digital news and storytelling, we’re looking for a skilled web editor who cares about art, archives, architecture, science, technology, and visual culture. We’re looking for someone who not only loves to visit museums to ponder a painting but wants to know the story behind it; someone who is curious about cultural heritage and the arts.


The web editor is responsible for maintaining pages across Getty’s website, sourcing and editing stories and images, writing and editing informational text and headlines, and crafting display copy, links, and CTAs.


This is a full-time position reporting to the Digital Editor. The role is part of the Digital Content Strategy team in the Getty Trust’s Communications Department, which creates and designs digital experiences around the visual arts and cultural heritage in support of the Getty’s institutional vision.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Write and edit headlines and display copy for Getty’s wide range of stories
  • Act as line editor for the home page and other top-level pages on, ensuring that information is accurate and timely
  • Source and clear brand-compliant images and rights and permissions
  • Input stories and informational copy into Getty’s content management system and images and metadata into our digital asset management system
  • Copyedit, proof, and format text as needed
  • Assign and edit stories as needed


  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • 1-3 years of professional experience in an editorial or digital role
  • Web production experience: CMS and image editing (Adobe Photoshop or comparable)
  • Strong narrative writing ability, with facility for both informational and storytelling content
  • Experience writing for a wide variety of audiences and applications
  • Ability to write strong and compelling headlines, deks, ledes, and other story elements and to pair text and image in logical and compelling ways
  • Experience editing writers of varying skill levels
  • Experience sourcing, editing and publishing images for digital stories, as well as researching copyright status of images

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent writing skills, organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail are required
  • Ability and willingness to follow an editorial style guide
  • Ability to write and adapt content for a broad range of digital platforms, including informational webpages, help pages, calendar listings, e-newsletters and email blasts, white papers, blogs, marketing landing pages, and social media
  • Knowledge of Chicago and AP style
  • Facility with fact-checking and copyediting
  • Ability to assess and edit images for brand-compliance and general quality (e.g., contrast, color temperature, etc.), and to correct for latter
  • Understanding of and commitment to accessibility best practices as they apply to writing and imagery, including knowledge of inclusive language and how to craft context-appropriate alt text
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and appropriate voice/tone for each
  • Familiarity with copyright law and licensing (especially Creative Commons)
  • Strong initiative and follow-through, combined with a willingness to work collaboratively in a complex environment
  • Interest in art and cultural heritage and its connections to contemporary culture
