The Squire Foundation : Artist in Residence Program

THE SQUIRE FOUNDATION  is a non-profit empowerment foundation, dedicated to civic and educational programs for artists, curators and all manner of creative people.

SQUIRE is committed to cultivating a global perspective through engaging with the aesthetics of contemporary art, in all it’s forms, on a local level. Established in memory of Morris Bear Squire, the SQUIRE Artist-in-Residence program plays an important supportive role for the arts in greater Southern California by bringing national and international artists to Santa Barbara and the Tri-County areas during the Spring and Fall of each calendar year.

Through our close cooperation with, and support of, various local art-focused groups, institutions, and non-profit organizations, the SQUIRE FOUNDATION is one of Santa Barbara’s primary Artist-in-Residence resources for artists from around the world who wish to come create and share their work with Santa Barbara and the Tri-Counties.

Since 2014, SQUIRE has offered a comprehensive range of Artist-in-Residence programming.

Currently SQUIRE offers the following Residencies:

Artists working in all media and at any stage in their career are welcome to apply for residencies (during specified dates) for a minimum of 3 weeks and a maximum of 2 months throughout each calendar year.

The selected artists will each receive an invitation to stay at our Executive Director’s Villa and Studio in the foothills of Santa Barbara. Artists are encouraged to create new work at the Squire Campus, and a solo exhibition will be arranged at an appropriate location in Santa Barbara of those works or works previously made and finished during residency, at the end of each artist’s stay. Artists are encouraged to spend a minimum of 25 hours/week working in their studio. Artists will have free WiFi, access to our Executive Director’s quarters, with additional bathrooms/kitchen/library/living space/pool/hot tub, and access to a studio/production space. Artists will also be given a materials stipend, an Uber or rental car stipend, and airfare to and from the residency. Artists are required to give a public lecture and/or workshop during the course of the residency for which stipends will in most cases be offered. During the course of the residency, we will arrange for curator/fellow artist/student visits to the artist’s’ studio. SQUIRE staff will be on-hand throughout the artist’s stay to provide comprehensive support and to respond to the studio needs of our Artists-in-Residence.

Spouses, children, friends and dogs are encouraged to visit and live with artists during their residency!

Artists working in all media and at all levels of their career are encouraged to submit an application. Applications will be judged based on the nature of sample works, CV, the project(s) proposed, the compelling nature of the artist’s discussion of their project(s), and the potential to make a contribution to the public and to the artist’s own career while in residency.

SQUIRE staff will review applications and select artists for each Spring and Fall cycle.. All applicants will be notified by e-mail. PLEASE DO NOT CALL OR EMAIL THE SQUIRE FOUNDATION FOR SELECTION RESULTS.

All applicant artists must be able to work in the United States and must be 18 years of age or older. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another residency program at the same time as a SQUIRE residency.
