A Quiet Spring Wanders Through the Apartment (original title: En tyst vår vandrar genom lägenheten) finds its starting point in the spaces we establish for our existence. These spaces can be physical places, but also mental states that enable both interpersonal encounters as well as introspection and shielding ourselves from the noise of the outside world.

Now, when our society has been shaken to its core, we have been forced to adapt to completely new sorts of limitations and in this, have even needed to create new conditions for how we encounter each other. We have seen a shift between private and public spaces, and social conventions are being renegotiated at the moment of writing in order to adapt to a new reality. Our conversations (often conducted at a distance) have circled around a longing to be part of a community, and how that can be reconciled with our need for solitude. What are the preconditions for interpersonal existence? When is seclusion self-selected and when is it involuntary and isolating? Regardless of our living conditions, we are part of a greater context and need to relate to it in one way or another. These ponderings are not unique to our time – they are constantly recurring within artistic practices and hold an abundance of perspectives.

The exhibition brings together works from Magasin III’s collection that invite thoughts about the individual’s relationship to their broader context. The works can be associated with questions of safety, personal freedom, limitations, and introversion—often with multifaceted perspectives.

The title of the exhibition is borrowed from the work En tyst vår vandrar genom lägenheten from 2015 by Jockum Nordström, which brought our thoughts to a silence, a pause, that can appear both trying and harmonious at the same time. By pondering upon these works, created between c. 1950 and 2019, we have found multiple entry points to reflect on our current times.
