Clyfford Still Museum : Director of Marketing and Communications

The Clyfford Still Museum is at an exciting stage in its short history. Museum visitation, public engagement, and revenues are strong and trending upward, and we have just completed a substantial two-year visitor study that provided important insights about visitor preferences. This position will lead the Museum’s initiative to remake our marketing and communications strategies to address the findings of this visitor study. This position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and measuring the success of the Museum’s comprehensive communications, public relations, and marketing program to elevate awareness and increase community participation, articulate and strengthen our brand, facilitate internal and external communications, and advance the Museum’s reputation and standing in local, national and international markets.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Devise and execute a strategy to implement recommendations of visitor research studies; conduct market research and surveys as needed; use research and survey findings to further the Museum’s strategic objectives
  • Create and implement annual marketing plans; negotiate media buys, partnerships and sponsorships, and manage fulfillment and evaluation of these arrangements
  • Oversee editorial copy, design, production, editing and distribution of all print collateral and digital communications; maintain inventory of informational and promotional collateral; and manage institutional adherence to brand and style standards, as well as mission and aesthetic values, across all platforms
  • Serve as the Museum’s media representative; coordinate and respond to media interest; maintain positive relationships with press and media outlets; write press releases, arrange press conferences and events, and analyze and report on media coverage
  • Devise social media and content strategies, and oversee activities on key platforms; ensure content is edited, accurate and reflects the Museum’s brand standards
  • Work closely with departmental heads to communicate and promote their programs and initiatives; oversee strategy and content production for member communications and for various departmental projects
  • Set up photo and video shoots and obtaining necessary images, bios, and programmatic information as needed
  • Manage website content on an ongoing basis
  • In consultation with the Museum’s management, determine annual expense and revenue budgets for operations that reflect organizational strategic priorities
  • Monitor and apply relevant trends and developments in marketing and public relations
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties including taking on multiple tasks as may be required for a small-staffed institution

Minimum Education, Job Qualifications and Experience

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution (public relations, journalism, marketing or a related field are desirable but not required)
  • Minimum of five to seven years of professional experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, and a demonstrated record of success in promoting audience building and engagement
  • Experience in media purchasing; competence in the latest digital marketing methods
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing and executing innovative and comprehensive communications strategies
  • Fluency in major social media platforms and other e-communications platforms such as Constant Contact and Paperless Post
  • Exceptional aesthetic values; ability to work with contract creative design team members to conceive of compelling visual content
  • Experience in project management; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytic, and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent written (including writing, editing and proofreading) and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office suite, desktop publishing software, graphics programs, and presentation software
  • Experience in website development and content management
  • Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams
