More about Collections at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Isabella Stewart Gardner opened her museum in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston to the public in 1903. In a building modeled on a Venetian Palazzo, complete with a four story garden courtyard,  Isabella arranged her fine art collection within a suite of galleries in the museum that transports visitors from an ancient Roman garden to the salons of grand Italian palazzi of the Renaissance.

The collection contains some of the rarest and finest old master works in America, including a drawing Michelangelo, Rembrandt’s only seascape (stolen 1990), and the first painting by Matisse to enter an American museum. Other marquee names of Western art history such as Botticelli, Degas, Giotto, Manet, Piero della Francesca, Raphael, Sargent, and Titian are represented in the collection. In addition to these canonical objects, the collection displays a remarkable depth, covering a chronological span from ancient Egypt to early twentieth-century America, and geographic terrains as diverse as North America through Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and virtually all of Asia. The collection is extremely varied in its range of media: examples of decorative arts, drawing, furniture, painting, sculpture, and textiles can be found in virtually every gallery, along with books, manuscripts, autographed letters, photographs and “bric a brac.”

As per Isabella Stewart Gardner’s wishes, the galleries preserve her installations.  Any single work in the collection can be understood in a number of ways: as the product of a certain artist, rooted in a precise place at a particular time. Or it can be considered as part of an arrangement generated in Isabella’s imagination, which allowed thought-provoking, and sometimes challenging, juxtapositions across time and place.  A wing designed by architect Renzo Piano was added to the museum in 2012 and houses a special exhibition space, a concert hall, and a conservation lab.
