Job Summary

The Education Department of the J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a part-time, limited term Gallery Educator to co-develop and manage mindfulness-based applications to gallery engagement. As a member of the Education, Public Programs, and Interpretive Content Department, the Gallery Educator will have broad knowledge of mindfulness in museum education best practices. The Gallery Educator will build and sustain relationships with external partners, co-create programs with a department colleagues, and develop and manage a mindful looking program. The chosen candidate will research mindfulness-based programming at other museums and work closely with program partners to develop best practices in mindfulness applications. This individual will assist in the development of goals and objectives using gallery engagement strategies to meet the needs of museum audiences. Successful candidates will have a track record demonstrating their passion for working with youth and audiences traditionally underserved by museums. Under minimal supervision, the Gallery Educator develops, implements, and manages mindfulness-based educational projects and programs; these arts-based initiatives will often relate to the permanent collection and changing exhibitions, to foster an appreciation and deeper understanding of art. The Gallery Educator collaborates and leads cross-functional teams to achieve educational programming goals, and will teach and train staff and volunteers mindfulness based approaches to exploring the Museum’s collection.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Ensures a quality museum experience through project and program development and implementation
  • Develops goals and objectives and implements projects using museum engagement strategies to meet the needs of museum audiences
  • Collaborates on research on mindfulness in museums
  • Co-manages projects, determines priorities and action items, prepares and manages project budgets, provides supporting documentation and updates as necessary, and collaborates across departments as required
  • Develops and teaches mindful looking programs for educational audiences
  • Communicates and collaborates extensively with internal and external experts in various fields, including museum educators, meditation practitioners, curators, and artists
  • Works to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts
  • Coordinates program and project logistics on-site
  • May train educators and educational support staff, observe and assess programs

Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Art Education, Studio Arts or related field required; Master’s degree preferred
    • 3+ years of teaching experience, preferably in a museum setting
    • Fluency in a foreign language, preferably Spanish

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven knowledge of current mindfulness theory and practice, and museum education theory and practice
  • Proven experience teaching in a museum or educational environment
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent written and editorial skills
  • Ability to think creatively to expand outreach and program impact
  • Proven ability to succeed within a collaborative work environment
  • Proven ability to accurately prioritize and lead concurrent projects
  • Ability to juggle shifting priorities
  • Proven ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Sensitivity to operational guidelines
  • Foreign language skills a plus
