Job Summary

Realizes and may conceive programmatic projects related to important topics in the field of art history and related disciplines, developing new and innovative approaches. Participates in strategic partnerships and other long- and short- term collaborations with arts institutions locally, nationally, and internationally. Fosters communications and collaborations across other departments and programs of the Trust. Carries on high-level independent research that will lead to outcomes that might include, peer-reviewed journal articles, books, exhibitions, workshops, and public programs.  Participates actively as a core team-member in the Getty’s African American Art History Initiative.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Realizes and may conceive research and programmatic projects (for example: articles, books, exhibitions, workshops, public programs, etc.) that support and advance the African American Art History Initiative
  • Participates in strategic partnerships and other long- and short- term collaborations with arts institutions locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Identifies underdeveloped areas of research in fields of art history and related disciplines
  • Fosters communication and collaboration across departments and programs of the Trust
  • Represents institution’s initiatives and projects at public and private symposia, panels, workshops, and seminars, locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Develops and contributes to research projects; publishes results as appropriate, in a variety of formats
  • Develops a broad network of local, national, and international contacts within the field of art history, and within the field(s) of specialization
  • May research holdings in Special Collections and consider acquisitions
  • Researches, presents and publishes own scholarship

 

 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in art history preferred
  • 1-3 years experience in an academic setting, research institute, or art museum (education may be considered)
  • Expertise in the field of modern and contemporary African American art history

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to build long-term relationships, collaborate and direct teams across disciplines
  • Advanced research writing and editorial skills
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines for oneself
  • Ability to work alone, or in teams
