Job Summary

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a highly experienced Senior Public Program Specialist with a passion for innovative visual arts programming to manage the museum’s acclaimed lecture series at the Getty Center. This position serves a pivotal role in connecting our diverse audiences with an array of diverse speakers, both nationally and internationally, through a variety of formats that offer multiple perspectives on the visual arts. Under broad direction, the Senior Public Program Specialist collaborates across curatorial, exhibition, education, communications and other trust programs and departments to program over 30 lectures, panel discussions, symposia, screenings, and performances with commentary in two venues:  450-seat Harold Williams Auditorium, 150-seat Museum Lecture Hall.  Reports directly to the Head of Museum Public Programs within the Education, Public Programs and Interpretive Content Department.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Directs research, development, implementation and assessment of innovative public speaker programs for academic and general interest audiences
  • Work directly with curators and other museum professionals to understand exhibition and collection objectives in order to design effective programs which enhance a visitor’s appreciation, as well as deepen their engagement with works of art
  • Manages financial resources and administers budgets for 30 to 35 programs annually
  • Manages internal communications necessary for execution of events such as work orders budget reports, activity reports, and statistical reports
  • Negotiates external contracts and oversees procurement processes for public programs including local, national and international presenters/vendors
  • Monitors daily operations, providing direction to internal staff and external vendors and presenters
  • Supervises events, coordinates event staff and maintains program standards
  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with other cultural and educational organizations as well as publishers, opinion makers, and popular speakers
  • Advocates for the audience(s); strives to create a positive, engaging and inclusive experience for all
  • Improves, augments, revitalizes and balances the overall programming slate in response to visitor feedback, evaluation data and best practices

Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in museum education, art education, art history, or closely related field strongly preferred
    • 8+ years of project/process management and subject area experience
    • Foreign language skills

  • Proven ability to manage projects, beginning to end
  • Proven ability to shape dynamic and topical speaker programs that appeal to diverse audiences.
  • Strong communication skills and proven ability to work with people at multiple levels throughout the organization
  • Proven ability to manage, multiple, sometimes competing deadlines
  • Very proficient in all basic office software and procedures
  • Proven ability to manage last-minute changes and troubleshoot urgent situations
  • Proven ability to lead a team, managing both people and work assignments
  • Proven ability to report on/represent work to the larger organization through various formats
  • Proven ability to think creatively and use new technologies to expand outreach and program impact
  • Excellent ability to manage budget and departmental resources to ensure department is aligned with strategic goals and objectives
  • Strong ability to plan effectively and to manage/supervise projects and departmental operational objectives
  • Familiarity with art history and the collecting areas of the J. Paul Getty Museum (Antiquities, Drawings, European Decorative Arts and Sculpture, European Paintings, Manuscripts, Photography
