Position Summary

The Director of Interpretation leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of interpretive approaches and strategies that help visitors of all ages, both individuals and groups, learn about and enjoy the Museum’s collection and exhibitions. As the Gardner Museum’s historic galleries do not have interpretive labels, the Director of Interpretation thinks creatively about how to illuminate the collection, connect visitors with works of art, and enhance the visitor experience through overseeing a range of programs and resources that include public tours, gallery talks, print and digital resources. The Director of Interpretation also plays a key role in the exhibition planning process, leading interpretation planning with curators, programmers and stakeholder teams to determine key audiences, develop dynamic special exhibition interpretation and identify evaluation strategies. They are an inventive thinker, compelling writer, and productive collaborator who can manage multiple projects on varying time frames and meet deadlines while experimenting with innovative processes and projects.

Responsibilities

Interpretive planning

  • Lead the creative process for interpretive resources for the historic building and collection as well as special exhibitions, identifying and refining strategies for engaging visitors, and assessing impact
  • Lead the process of articulating intended audiences and outcomes for special exhibitions and permanent collection projects, identifying appropriate interpretive vehicles, in collaboration with curatorial, education, and digital staff

Maintain Volunteer Programs

  • Own strategic development of volunteer engagement, providing the Assistant Manager for Tours and Visitor Learning Programs with direction to oversee recruitment, training, management, recognition, and ongoing assessment of volunteers
  • Strategically expand the existing cohort of volunteers to represent the diverse population of Boston
  • Manage a lively series of public gallery talks and tours

Administrative

  • Supervise the Associate Manager of Tours and Visitor Learning Programs, who is responsible for the booking, scheduling, and processing of all student and adult tours and workshops
  • Plan and oversee annual budget
  • Work with the development department on funding proposals
Requirements

Required

  • Five or more years of related interpretation planning, implementation and evaluation experience in art museums
  • MA in museum education, art history, art education, education or related fields
  • Strong communication, writing, and customer service/public relations skills
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of interpretive best practices for various audiences and learning styles 
  • Commitment to and passion for working with adults of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, including visitors, collaborators, staff, and volunteers
  • Strong skills in project management and in maintaining and meeting deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office and Google applications
  • Commitment to working with diverse constituents including staff and volunteers

Preferred 

  • Experience in creating and evaluating dynamic interpretation tools, materials, resources, and internal guidelines
  • Experience in managing volunteers
  • Experience in collaborating cross-departmentally, especially with curators
  • Awareness of and utilization of human-centered design methodology and digital technologies
  • Fluency in more than one language, especially Spanish or Chinese Mandarin
