Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum : Academic Programs Manager

 

Position Summary

Isabella Stewart Gardner believed that art had the power to change lives and she built a beautiful, personal, and immersive Museum setting to do so.  Today the Gardner is a living embodiment of her bold vision; a dynamic place where ideas and creativity in all its forms inspire visitors.  Through exhibitions, music, programs, and performances we strive to tell new stories and challenge assumptions through diverse voices and community members. 

The Academic Programs Manager develops, documents, and evaluates curricular and extracurricular partnerships and programs with colleges and universities, with an emphasis on community colleges. A skilled educator with experience in object-based teaching, they lead a range of educational initiatives, including the cross-departmental paid college internship program, Gardner Ambassadors. They are a collaborative team member, creative thinker, and can manage various projects while meeting deadlines.

Responsibilities

Academic Program Planning

  • Build relationships and partnerships with college/university faculty and administrators, with a focus on community colleges, that promote student learning and engagement with the collection and exhibitions 
  • Meet with university faculty and Museum Teachers to develop programs and experiences that support student learning and curricular connections with a wide range of disciplines
  • Work with public programs, education and curatorial teams to engage college and university audiences in Thursday evening programming
  • Support intensive professional development programs for educators, including training in constructivist pedagogies such as Visual Thinking Strategies
  • Periodically teach and facilitate Gardner programs

Maintain Gardner Ambassador Program 

  • Develop and manage Gardner Ambassador Program in consultation with Curator of Education, including recruitment, training, evaluation and documentation
  • Manage the strategic growth of this paid internship program over the next several years

Administrative

  • Collaborate with the marketing department to build and maintain email databases and marketing strategies to increase attendance by academic audiences 
  • Collaborate with membership and development teams to develop materials and promote engagement opportunities for University Members at the Gardner Museum
Requirements

Required

  • Three or more years of strong interactive museum teaching and/or teacher training skills and strong knowledge of constructivist, inquiry based teaching methods
  • Experience building academic and/or community based partnerships
  • Commitment to and passion for working with adults of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, including visitors, collaborators, staff, and volunteers
  • Strong skills in project management and in maintaining and meeting deadlines
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and team building skills, and customer service/public relations skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently by taking initiative and problem-solving
  • Availability to work on Thursday evenings and weekends as needed to oversee programming

Preferred

  • MA or higher in museum education, art education, art history, or related field
  • Fluency in more than one language, especially Spanish or Chinese Mandarin
  • Experience in managing diverse adult interns
