Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght : Director

The Marguerite and Aimé Maeght Foundation is a private foundation open to the public located near the village of Saint-Paul de Vence. Recognized as a public utility, its purpose is to receive, acquire, restore, preserve and exhibit works of art to the public.

Inaugurated on July 28, 1964 by André Malraux, in a building designed by the Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert, the Foundation was born from the friendship of Aimé Maeght, Parisian art dealer and gallery owner, with the great names in modern art, including Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger, Georges Braque, Alberto Giacometti, Marc Chagall and Eduardo Chillida.

The Maeght Foundation has one of the most important collections in Europe of 20th century paintings, sculptures and graphic works (Balthus, Bonnard, Braque, Calder, Chagall, Chillida, Giacometti, Light, Miró, Ubac, Tal-Coat) but also contemporary artists (Adami, Arroyo, Calzolari, Del Re, Dietman, Garouste, Hyber, Kelly, Mitchell, Monory, Pincemin, Sui Jianguo, Takis, Tàpies, Tatah, Visch…).

The Foundation’s Board of Directors includes prominent personalities, representatives of the State and members of the Maeght family. It is chaired by Adrien Maeght.

Position description
Main tasks of the position
Main activities: The Director is delegated by the President to manage the establishment and its administration.
Through its action and recognized expertise in the cultural field, it contributes to the influence and development of the Foundation within the framework of a safe and financially sustainable management and in respect of its identity and its status as a foundation recognized as a public utility.

Direction :
The Director proposes and implements the policy of acquisition, exhibitions, mediation and cultural events decided by the Board of Directors. In addition, s/he supervises and leads a policy of publishing and developing resources.
The Director is the guarantor of the conservation and enhancement of the collection. He or she maintains the inventory of the collection and ensures its collection.
The Director implements all the necessary means to define and ensure the successful implementation of a new project validated by the Board of Directors. The Direcotr associates the Foundation with educational projects of cultural value.

Management :
The Director manages the Foundation’s staff and proposes the necessary organisational changes. S/he mobilizes and supervises skills and ensures the quality of services. S/he is responsible for recruitment, reassignment and dismissal.
S/he builds the budget and ensures its proper execution.
The Director seeks, negotiates and proposes to the Board of Directors partnerships with other institutions, in France and abroad.
The Director seeks ways and means of development and works to diversify the Foundation’s resources. It leads the search for sponsorship among private donors and companies.

The Director is also responsible for the Foundation’s audience development and outreach by playing an active role in the network of major national and international institutions of modern and contemporary art. S/he develops and monitors the communication strategy.

Strong knowledge of modern and contemporary art
Knowledge of the artistic network in the field of modern and contemporary art
Ability to propose and implement high-level cultural programming
Knowledge of heritage and foundation legislation.
Negotiation skills.
Relational and managerial skills, ability to coordinate teams
Bilingual English/French. Other languages desired.
Mastery of new technologies, particularly for communication tools.
Daily presence at the Foundation.

Description of the experience sought
Cultural manager with proven international experience in the management of private or public cultural organizations and unquestionable skills and experience in the conservation and enhancement of a contemporary art collection.
Experience in the management of a cultural establishment
Experience in defining and implementing a collection development policy
Demonstrated expertise in the engineering of cultural projects, including their legal and financial dimensions.
Experience in the search for private funds and sponsorship
