Position Title: Part-time Visitor Services Assistant

Department: Visitor Services

Reports to: Director of Visitor Services

Type of Position: Non-exempt (hourly)

Schedule: Part-time, up to 29 hours/week

Scheduling Needs: Wednesdays – Monday’s 10:15 – 5:00 pm | Thursday Evenings 4:30 – 9:00 pm Must be available for at least two of the shifts listed, one being a weekend day.

Location: ISGM onsite

Position Summary

The Visitor Services Assistant is responsible for providing world class service to individuals and groups visiting the Museum. The Assistant position initiates a warm greeting, suggests options to enhance a visitor’s experience, guides visitors to their needs, and in doing all of this motivates the visitor to return. Additional responsibilities include working with the Museum’s ticketing system, assisting with initiatives designed to better understand our visitors (i.e.; surveys, etc.), and promoting programs.


  • Be a friendly, and approachable presence at all times in the Museum.
  • Assist all members, groups, and visitors of the Museum with their ticketing and other needs, including general admission, planned tours, concerts, lectures, and other events.
  • Operate the Museum’s ticketing terminals at the Admissions Desk efficiently and accurately
  • Provide knowledgeable assistance to visitors seeking information about the Museum and it’s surrounding areas
  • Be tactfully able to handle stressful situations
  • Inform visitors about Museum policies regarding bags, phone usage, photography, etc.
  • Promote awareness of daily programming, and visitor resources
  • Assist visitors at the Coat Room, ability to lift 30 lbs required
  • Have skills to negotiate and resolve problems
  • Complete opening and closing procedures efficiently and accurately
  • Responsible for attendance at all department training meetings
  • Perform other tasks as directed by the Director of Visitor Services
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Outstanding hospitality skills
  • Fluency in English
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, and moderate lifting
  • Be tactfully able to handle stressful situations
  • Have skills to negotiate and resolve problems
  • Dependability and punctuality are essential
  • Prior customer service or cash handling experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of Tessitura CRM system preferred
  • Interest in art, horticulture, architecture, or art history preferred
  • Occasional evening work required (for evening events and exhibition openings)
