Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum : Assistant/Associate Curator

 

Description

The Assistant/Associate Curator is responsible for developing exhibitions, research, managing and implementing curatorial aspects of exhibitions and their related publications, interpretation and materials. The Assistant/Associate Curator will contribute to and shape public programming. He/She will work closely with the Curator, Conservation, and the Education department, drawing on research and knowledge of the collection with a particular emphasis on nineteenth century art and material culture. The Assistant/Associate Curator will also oversee the Archives Department.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the conceptualization and planning of exhibitions, public programs, and digital projects
  • Propose new exhibitions, programs, and projects focusing on the collection and in collaboration with the curator of performing arts
  • Oversee the Archives Department (comprising Isabella Stewart Gardner’s personal papers), prioritizing projects and bringing goals into alignment with the museum’s strategic plan.
  • Participate in curatorial decisions in oversight of the collection and programs
  • Write texts for presentation of the collection and exhibitions (labels and guides, public relations texts, grant applications, online/website texts, digital interpretive tools, and other publications)
  • Present lectures and public talks
  • Research on the collection for digital projects and special exhibitions
  • Participate in conservation research, treatment, and publications
  • Cultivate donor support and contribute to the grant proposal writing process
  • Other duties as required
Requirements
  • PhD in art history, with research specialty in art of the nineteenth century and/or the history of collecting
  • Proficiency in two foreign languages; fluency in one of them
  • 2-3 years of curatorial work experience in an art museum
  • A record of publication in art history or a related field
  • Strong independent research skills
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • A demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for working in teams

The successful candidate will be hired as Assistant or Associate Curator depending on experience
