The Hepworth Wakefield : Cultural Gardener

£27,000 per annum

Full-time – 37 hours per week

Permanent contract

The Hepworth Wakefield Garden, designed by internationally renowned designer, Tom Stuart-Smith, will be one of the UK’s largest free public gardens, creating a major new visitor attraction for Wakefield and revitalising Wakefield Waterfront.  Work began on site in January and the garden will be completed by summer 2019, coinciding with Yorkshire Sculpture International, the UK’s largest sculpture festival taking place in Leeds and Wakefield.

The Hepworth Wakefield was established to act as a catalyst for the regeneration of Wakefield and its mission is to create experiences that inspire, captivate, surprise and enhance everyone’s lives. Our ambition is to create a garden that will extend this mission beyond the gallery walls, creating a beautiful public space for local communities and visitors alike with year-round interest, that will transform Wakefield Waterfront.

As Cultural Gardener, you will be responsible for the day to day planning and practical management of the garden, leading a team of volunteers. You will work with the wider gallery team to deliver an excellent visitor experience through delivery of engaging and informative events and activities and inspiring horticulture.  You will work closely with the project team and Tom Stuart-Smith to ensure the smooth completion and opening of the garden in summer 2019.

You will have extensive experience as a gardener in a garden that is open to the public; you will be skilled in a broad range of horticultural techniques and a have a high level of plant knowledge. You will fully appreciate the importance of access, interpretation, presentation and engagement, and ideally will have experience of developing and delivering horticultural events and activities, as well as public speaking.
