Frye Art Museum: Senior Director of Development

SALARY RANGE: $125,000

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Director of Development leads the Development Department and directs the Museum’s fundraising efforts in support of its institutional mission, programs, special projects, and operations. The position focuses on achieving the Museum’s annual fundraising goals and expanding philanthropic activities within the Museum as well as its community. The Senior Director of Development is responsible for all aspects of development, membership, and events, and supervises Development Department staff. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of nonprofit fundraising and successful stewardship of relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and governmental partners. The Senior Director of Development is a key member of the Museum’s senior staff and an ambassador to the Museum’s audience and community; the successful candidate will bring excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a keen ability to prioritize within a creative work environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work closely with the Director/CEO to develop an integrated plan to expand philanthropic support for the Museum and build a culture of philanthropy at all levels of the institution.
  • Create and implement a big-picture strategy for development initiatives across the institution and the Museum’s many audiences.
  • Direct and execute all aspects of the Museum’s development program, including major gift cultivation and stewardship; foundation and government grants; corporate giving and sponsorships; capital, endowment, individual, annual, and planned giving; and membership programs.
  • Build strong and mutually beneficial relationships between the Museum and the diverse communities it serves.
  • Expand and diversify the Museum’s donor base; work with the Director/CEO and in consultation with the Board of Trustees to identify and nurture new relationships as well as steward current donors.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of major gift donors.
  • Engage Trustees in fundraising efforts where appropriate.
  • Secure multi-year funding/underwriting for operations and programming.
  • Oversee additional fundraising for special projects and future capital campaigns.
  • Establish and manage new museum auxiliaries.
  • Attend monthly Board of Trustees meetings; prepare and present departmental progress reports as well as reports on specific development initiatives.
  • Work with the Communications Department to develop a common strategy and language to support the Museum’s mission, strategic plan, and development goals.
  • Work with the Curatorial and Education Departments to create fundraising opportunities based on the Museum’s exhibitions and programs.
  • Work with the CFO and Controller to process incoming support.
  • Oversee planning for and attend donor cultivation events, including exhibition openings, dinners, member tours, and other special fundraising opportunities.
  • Hire, train, supervise, guide, and mentor Development Department staff. Hire and oversee contract grant writers as necessary.
  • Plan and supervise electronic and mailed appeals and communications, grant writing and applications, corporate sponsorship proposals, planned giving, and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Oversee organization and maintenance of donor database.
  • Regularly evaluate Development Department goals and recommend short- and long-range strategic initiatives.
  • Ensure Development Department operates in alignment with the Museum’s values, mission, and vision.
  • Perform all duties in a professional manner, in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated success in managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources; an established record of networking with community stakeholders and businesses in the greater Seattle area is helpful.
  • Knowledge of a broad base of principles for fundraising and planned giving, applying best practices and ethical standards.
  • The ability to communicate the Museum’s mission and interests to a broad audience with genuine enthusiasm.
  • Strong leadership, management, supervisory, training, and mentorship skills.
  • Exceptional planning and project management skills.
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with budgeting and fiscal oversight.
  • Accountability, attention to detail, and the ability to complete assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively as a team and independently, as projects require.
  • Positive attitude and enjoyment working with a range of organizational stakeholders, including high-level corporate and governmental officials.
  • Proven track record with the strategic use of social media for donor engagement and fundraising campaigns.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Ten or more years of proven professional experience in a nonprofit environment, including supervisory experience, developing and implementing significant and successful fundraising efforts; experience working for museums or other arts institutions is a strong advantage.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work areas are inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise. Work is occasionally performed at other indoor and outdoor event sites. Shift times may vary to meet the Museum’s requirement to staff the facilities at all hours. Work may require periods of sustained standing during Museum events.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED

  • Sitting/standing/walking: Approximately 80% of time is spent seated while working at a desk. Balance of time (approximately 20%) is spent standing or moving around the work area. Ability to stand for extended periods of time at Museum events.
  • Speaking/hearing: Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for effective communication with the public and co-workers.
  • Lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling: The ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds is necessary for moving material and equipment for events.
  • Vision: Corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary to effectively use the computer screens.
  • Stooping/kneeling: The ability to stoop and kneel is necessary for accessing files.
  • Reaching/handling: Good manual dexterity is necessary for computer keyboard use and for retrieving and working with appropriate paperwork, equipment, and supplies.
