Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre was founded by the couple Jo and Marlies Eijck and can rightly be called a Gesamtkunstwerk . Based on their special philosophy of life, they have linked art with the beautiful nature around the castle in Wijlre.
“In Wijlre, art, architecture and landscape form a perfect unity.”
In 1981 the couple acquired Castle Wijlre, which had fallen into disrepair. She restored the historic castle, the coach house and the castle garden. The Hedge House was built in 2001, to a design by architect Wiel Arets. The beautiful art pavilion houses an orchid greenhouse, an orangery, a chicken coop and an exhibition space.
“It is probably the only art gallery in the world where plants and orchids can be seen growing above the art display room where a glass chicken coop complements the building.”
The couple Jo and Marlies Eijck have organized inspiring and internationally acclaimed exhibitions over the years. In 2012, on the initiative of the couple Jo and Marlies Eijck and the couple Albert and Hannie Groot-Wijnands, the preservation of the country estate and the programming of exhibitions, educational activities and cultural projects were transferred to the Kasteel Wijlre estate foundation.
In September 2017, the Eijck couple donated the estate to Elisabeth Strouven Fund. Since then the fund has taken care of the maintenance of the estate. The Kasteel Wijlre estate foundation is responsible for the exploitation, the cultural programming of exhibitions and projects and the maintenance of the garden.
