Supporting contemporary artists and curators through project spaces and residencies.

Bringing together different perspectives about residencies, looking at the different models, examples of when and how they work best for organisations and the artist, pitfalls to avoid, what are the tensions – from the funders or board perspective to audience development, demonstrating value?

We held our call on the 15th of April and it was extremely fruitful in exchanging experiences and ideas. It gave an excellent insight into how foundations are dealing with the questions like how to select the artist, how to deal with partners, with funding and what models function well, and what is not advisable.
 
Even though in the end, it all comes down to a hand-tailored model for any organisation according to their own philosophy, we do recommend you to watch this talk to be stimulated by many intelligent ideas and first-hand experiences, whether you are considering starting a residence, or whether you are already years into the process.

This first call held on 15 April 2021 included:

Here are the main questions that the group our discussing:

  1. How do you partner or fund your residencies > what are the issues or programme constraints or freedom around this funding model if any?
  2. How do you select the recipients for the residency > is it mixed methods? What works best? Have you changed the processes over time based on experience and why?
  3. Are your residencies an offshoot of your main activities or do they drive and inform them?
  4. What would you do differently or would encourage others to avoid doing?
  5. What would be your ideal artist/curator residency, or have you already had some amazing examples? > What made them so fantastic for you as an organisation and the residents themselves? (Perhaps include one of these in your presentation)
