DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Art in General currently seeks a dynamic and ambitious full-time Development Director to manage the organization’s key fundraising initiatives: individual giving, special events, and grants.

The Development Director reports to the Executive Director, works directly with the Board of Directors and helps to manage junior staff, vendors, and interns. Knowledge of contemporary art and interest in working directly with patrons, foundations, and artists is crucial.

Working within a small and highly dedicated team, the Development Director will lead donor cultivation, fundraising events and initiatives, institutional grants and partnerships, and membership programs on behalf of the organization.

The successful candidate will join this dynamic, esteemed, and artist-centric contemporary art institution with the mandate to implement new fundraising ideas and prospects, while building on the excellence of Art in General’s past and current initiatives and its community of supporters.

Must have a proven track record of securing individual gifts. Familiarity with New York’s fundraising sources, foundations, and arts patronage circles is essential. Prior experience planning fundraising events as well as working closely with Director and Board levels of a nonprofit institutions is required. Must be capable of meeting deadlines and goals as well as creating and managing budgets.

Candidate should have prior development experience inside a non-profit environment. Several years of progressively responsible fundraising experience that includes everything from research to cultivation to solicitation to stewardship is desired. A highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, organized, adaptable, hardworking, and energetic outlook is necessary.

Successful applicants must be capable of handling a high level of work that includes evening and weekend hours when required, and the sensitivity to handle important relationships. Willingness to travel occasionally as part of job duties a plus. Salary is commensurate with experience.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Conceptualize, develop and realize development plans with tangible goals within Art in General’s larger institutional strategic plan

Create specific and individualized cultivation plans and make direct asks for gifts alongside those made in tandem with the Executive Director and Board

Craft compelling events, experiences, trips and programs that engage donors at various levels of giving and directly involve Art in General’s ethos, programs and artists

Maintain the organization’s grant calendar and work alongside senior and junior staff in writing and submitting government and foundation grants and reports, ensuring all deadlines are met

Speak and write passionately and genuinely about Art in General’s mission, programs and values with confidence and be overall knowledgeable and articulate about contemporary art with diverse constituents

Work side-by-side with a small and highly engaged team including Executive Director, Board of Directors and help to manage junior staff, vendors, and interns

Continue cultivation of longtime and current supporters as well as identify new and potential donors on a local, national and international scale

Manage gift and grant processing through Donor Perfect and handle acknowledgements and renewal calendars

Ability to work independently and proactively towards meeting goals and deadlines

Develop methods to continuously assess the effectiveness of programs and strategies and be willing to try out new ideas

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

— Minimum five years’ non-profit development experience in the arts
— Exceptional interpersonal and writing skills
— Proven ability to meet goals and deadlines
— Prior experience planning small- to large-scale fundraising events
— Familiarity with art sales strategies for auctions and limited editions
— Familiarity with government and foundation grants and reporting
— Demonstrated aptitude with budgets and financial documentation
— Strategic thinker able to conceptualize and implement ideas effectively
— Strong organizational abilities and leadership skills
— Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
— Effective and professional negotiating and diplomacy skills
— Strong attention to detail
— Proficiency in Donor Perfect software
— Minimum B.A. in a relevant field is required, with M.A. preferred
